柯尔律治在《失意吟》（Dejection :An Ode）开头引用过那首苏格兰民谣《帕特里克·斯本士爵士》（Sir Patrick Spens）中的一节：
昨天深夜，我曾瞥见
新月将残月拥抱；
船长！船长！我真担心
会有凶险的风暴。

这首民谣的版本有很多种，最详细的有二十二节，最简单的只有十一节。
柯尔律治引用那版原文如下：
Late, late yestreen I saw the new Moon,
With the old Moon in her arms;
And I fear, I fear, my Master dear !
We shall have a deadly storm.
二十二节全本原文如下：
I saw the new moon late yestreen
Wi' the auld moon in her arm;
And if we gang to sea, master,
I fear we'll come to harm.
诺顿版(Norton)英国文学选辑卷一收入的就是最简版，原文又有不同：
Late, late yestreen I saw the new moon
Wi' the auld moon in her arm;
And I fear, I fear, my dear master,
That we will come to harm.
这首民谣大概意思是国王听信谗言派出那位最好的船长在暴风雨中出海前往挪威，斯本士爵士知道此行凶多吉少，却不能抗命，终于在暴风雨中葬身深海。
